On behalf of the University of Alabama Retirees’ Association, I wish to welcome you to the world of retirement. If you have been retired for some while, you have already discovered newfound freedom. If you are just retiring, you will wonder how you ever had time for work. (Hint: The full calendars never go away).
UABRA is your retirement organization-it is your voice in Montgomery on issues involving your retirement benefits, including health care, the retirement fund, COLAs and the recognition of the years of hard work and dedication to the education of the citizens of this State. Your membership in this organization may be the only chance we have to secure a COLA in the foreseeable future. UAB has some 3,000 living retirees but UABRA has only 1,100 members. This means we have work to do. The Governor and Legislature only respond to two things-money and votes. Our dues are modest, so that does not catch their attention. However, the fact that we are large and getting larger plus the fact that we are informed and VOTE will get their attention! Since our organization is open to all faculty and staff of UAB, University Hospital personnel, their spouses, widows, and widowers—anyone who draws a retirement check from RSA, we have lots of room to grow. We even have a special membership category for those who are nearing retirement or who have a special connection with UAB, our Associate Membership, which is only $10.00 per year. (Associates enjoy all benefits of membership except a vote).
All members get at least four newsletters each year. They also enjoy a fall and a spring seminar that brings great speakers on special topics. Our Annual Membership meeting introduces the new board members and the officers of the organization as well as brings yet another great speaker before the membership. A membership application can be easily downloaded from this website under the JOIN link. Print one and give it to a fellow retiree that has not taken time to join yet.
Again, if you are new, we are proud to have you, thanks for joining. If you are renewing your membership and have been with us for a while, thanks for sticking with us. We need all of our members and we are proud of the fact that we are the largest group of organized higher education retirees in the State! Welcome.
